TWO Grade 7 learners from the Windhoek Gymnasium died and many others were injured when the bus they were travelling in left the road an overturned.
Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay, Hardap Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator confirmed that the accident occurred earlier on Sunday morning and said police officers were deployed to the scene to assess the situation.
An announcement by the school’s Managing Director, Colette Rieckert informed parents and teachers about the incident.
The message confirmed that two of the Grade 7 learners died as a result of the accident and that many more were injured. The 65-seater bus was on its way south to the Orange River and the accident occurred 70 kilometres outside Mariental.
Rieckert indicated that the school mobilised all possible resources to collect the injured children and to transport them to hospital. Other buses were sent to collect the rest of the teachers and children.
