THE 11-year-old Danelle Mouton died tragically while fleeing for her life before an out of control vehicle driven by a drunken driver in the Kuvukiland neighbourhood of Rehoboth.
According to Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi of the Namibian Police’s Public Relations Division, the tragic incident occurred between 16:30 and 17:00 on Saturday afternoon when driver of a silver sedan car was allegedly speeding down a road in which the deceased girl and other children were playing.
“The children ran in different directions to escape the speeding vehicle but the driver, who lost control over the car, drove through a yard fence and into a tin shack. Unfortunately the deceased child who ran into that yard was hit by the drunken driver and died instantly.”
Chief Inspector Shikwambi said the driver, whose identity is known to police, fled from the scene and must still be arrested. She said once the man is taken into custody he will be charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving as well failing to stop at the scene of an accident to assist the victim.
Hundreds of bystanders that gathered at the scene of the tragedy, informed the police that the man that emerged from the car after driving into the shack was under the influence of alcohol.
