THE first ever Top Score 7-a-side Oshiwana tournament is expected to kick off on Friday with 47 teams that will participate from both corporate, business and community at large.
The tournament will be played over three days and will be divided in 8 groups. The tournament will conclude its activities with the finals on Sunday.
It is the fourth time the Top Score maize meal brand of Namib Mills is hosting the tournament at Oshakati. The company this year sponsors the Northern tournament to the tune of N$ 200 000.
In speech read on her behalf, Namib Mills’ senior brand manager, Marne Bouwer, said the original Top Score 7-a-side tournament spans over 19 years, where they gave opportunity to corporate companies to enter, but they thought of bringing it to the community “Oshiwana.”
“We believe that sport creates well rounded individuals and citizens in communities,” said Bouwer, adding that Namib Mills is committed to Namibia, which is formed by millions of community’s members.
According to Bouwer, the aim of the tournament is to encourage people to use this popular social event to get together, to build life-long friendships and to get to know each other.
Bouwer explained that the tournament is about investing in the development of sport, ploughing back into the communities and community upliftment.
The tournament includes a floating trophy, gold, silver and bronze medals for the top three winning teams.
Prize money includes N$ 15 000 for the winning team, N$ 7 000 for the runners-up and N$ 3 000 for third place.
