TRAGEDY struck at the Ondjungulume Village in the Otamanzi Constituency when three small children, the five-year-old Aina Silas, the four-year-old Ndeyanale.
Ndeyanale and Shekutamba Ndeyanale, who is one year and seven months old drowned in a pool of water while playing.
Inspector Lineekela Shikongo from the Public Relations Division Namibian Police in the Omusati Region confirmed the tragic set of events and said the incident occurred at about 12:30 on Friday afternoon.
“It is alleged that the three siblings were on their way home from visiting their grandparents when they started playing around the pond that formed as a result of the rain that fell over the region during the past week. The pond where the tragedy occurred is quite close to the homestead where their parents live, Inspector Shikongo said.
He said that when the children did not arrive home within a reasonable time, family members went out looking for them and discovered their bodies floating in the water.
As a result of the tragedy Inspector Shikongo on behalf of the Namibian Police in Omusati Region issued a stern caution to parents and guardians to take extra precautions when taking care of their children especially after heavy rains have fallen in the region.
It is believed that the children got into trouble when they moved into deeper water at a spot where a well was dug at some stage. Flood water inundated lower laying areas making the deep holes such as wells invisible to people.
According to Inspector Shikongo the mortal remains of the three small children was taken to the Police Mortuary at Okahao where a post mortem examination still has to be performed as part of the investigation into the tragedy.
