SATURDAY’S Oshakati-East by-election was yet another dramatic demonstration of voter apathy bypassing by far the apathy demonstrated during the recent Ondangwa Urban by-election.
Amidst the official opening 20th Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair and the Olufuko Annual Cultural Festival that was going on at the same time as the by-election and despite the low voter turnout at the polls, the Swapo candidate garnered more than 90 percent of the votes in Oshakati-East by-election.
Only 3,413 of a total of over 18,000 registered voters turned up at the 21 polling stations to cast their votes yesterday.
The Swapo candidate Abner Shikongo was declared the winner with 2,935 votes.
Independent candidate Fiina Kuutondokwa-Sheehama came a distant second with 235 votes while PDM’s Teophilus Kamati came third with 185 followed by NEFF’s Festus Shaduva with 32 votes.
Iiyambo Elias of the CoD and Kambayi Rebekka of Swanu got 17 and 10 votes respectively.
The Oshakati-East by-election was necessitated by the death of former Councillor, Lotto Kuushomwa, during May this year.
