Suspended Nanso leaders laugh off suspensions

THE four suspended Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) student leaders, including Vice President Benard Kavau, have labelled their suspensions a joke as nothing was allegedly put on paper and they have not yet been formally notified of the suspensions.

This is despite the fact that their suspensions came as a collective decision at the General Students Council (GSC) meeting held over the weekend.

The GSC, the highest decision making body of Nanso, consists of Regional Chairpersons, the National Executive Committee and Student representative Councils. The GSC meeting held at Ongwediva suspended Kavau, Nanso Spokesperson Tyson Hihanguapo, Khomas Regional Chairperson Samuel Amunime and IUM SRC President Sheya Ngolo on various charges ranging from insubordination, bringing the organisation into disrepute and  theft by false presence.

According to Hihanguapo, the suspension is merely a rumour at this point.

He has been allegedly charged with theft for allegedly taking money from students at UNAM’s Ogongo campus while promising to register them.

“Hihanguapo used the organisation’s name and stole money from two students that he would help register them, at a fee of N$ 1,000 each.  One of the students officially laid a criminal charge but the other one did not. Nanso is not mandated to register students into institutions. These comrades directly discredited the policies and deliberately sabotaged student activities,” Nanso Secretary General, Simon Taapopi, told Informanté.

The suspensions, he said, are not punishment but are instead aimed at a fair disciplinary hearing.
