Suspected fraudulent travel agents denied bail

Eba Kandovazu

THREE women who allegedly posed as travel agents and swindled about thirteen people by asking them to pay money in return for cheaper and affordable flights to Europe, were this morning denied bail when they made a court appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s court.

Delilah Katire, Mbatemua Tjiho and Beatrix Haimbundja were denied bail on the grounds of seriousness of the offence and public interest. State Prosecutor Cedric Mundila maintained that investigations are still at their earliest stage. It is also feared that the suspects might interfere with investigations if released on bail.

The trio face charges of fraud and money laundering to the tune of N$199 000.

They were taken in for questioning on Monday when people with similar complaints about the travel agency, Alma Travel and Tours, gave statements at the Windhoek police station.

According to court documentation, Katire already has a pending case of a similar nature.

The matter was postponed to 2 December for further investigations.

The suspects are being detained at the Windhoek police station. Magistrate Ndapewa Amadhila is presiding.
