Having learned with sadness about the passing of Major General Peter Nambundunga, a hero of the struggle for Namibia’s independence, President Hage Geingob conferred the honour of a State Funeral on the fallen freedom fighter.
Major General Peter Nambundunga passed away on 14 January 2019, at the Ongwediva Medi Park Private Hospital.
Dr. Geingob further announced a period of national mourning that will be observed from Wednesday to Saturday this week during which all national flags must be flown at half-mast. The remains of Major General Nambundunga will be interred at Omugulugombashe in Omusati Region on Saturday, 26 January 2019.
The late Major General Nambundunga left Namibia 1974 to join the liberation struggle and received his basic military training at Cassapa in 1975. After his basic training, he formed part of the first intake of trainees at Kongwa in Tanzania. Due to his outstanding competencies, Major General Nambundunda was selected to become a Military Instructor at Kongwa. He rose through the ranks of the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), becoming a Political Commissar and eventually being appointed PLAN Chief of Logistics and member of the Military Council.
In 1990, Late Major General Nambundunga was inducted in the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) with the rank of Colonel and was appointed Chief of Staff for Logistics. He served the Ministry of Defence and the NDF in various capacities including Deputy Army Commander (1996), Chief of Staff Personnel (1997), NDF Chief of Staff (2000), Army Commander (2005 – 2008) and Acting Chief of the Namibian Defence Force (2009 – 2011).
Major General Nambundunga also commanded the Namibian contingent in the DRC on peacekeeping operations where he was also appointed as Deputy Force Commander of SADC Forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He participated and represented Namibia with distinction in the meetings of the Joint Verification Committee which oversaw the peace process in the DRC.
After his retirement from active military service, Major General Nambundunga was appointed Special Advisor to the Governor of Ohangwena Region by former President Pohamba in 2014 and reappointed by President Geingob in 2017, a position he held until the time of his death.
Having learned with sadness about the passing of the old soldier, President Geingob said: “Major General Nambundunga leaves behind a rich legacy of service in PLAN, and as Army Commander in the NDF.”
President Geingob extended his deepest sympathies to the family, comrades and friends.
