A SWAKOPMUND resident who in 2015 carried out a series of sexual assault crimes on women and a girl child was today handed an effective 30 years jail sentence.
The 33-year-old Brendan van Wyk was also faced a fourth charge of rape, which he was acquitted for after it was found that the sexual act was consensual.
According to Judge Dinah Usiku, the state failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that indeed the complainant for that specific charge was raped.
According to him, he paid the woman N$70 for sex.
In the separate three rape charges, the women were raped in Mondesa.
Judge Usiku sentenced Van Wyk to 15 years for each of the rapes.
The third charge, which pertains to the rape of a minor child, was ordered to run concurrently with the first rape sentence.
In her ruling, Judge Dinah maintained that the rape incidents occurred when the suspect was already out on bail for another sexual assault charge, which makes him a danger to society.
His previous convictions also include possession of stolen goods, assault, assault of a police officer, malicious damage to property and robbery.
She further remarked that his actions show that he is incapable of rehabilitation.
