Sanitary pads will help to improve lives

Marthina Mutanga

Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) donated sanitary pads to the value of N$10 000 to four different charities in response to a call by the Namibian Government to provide school going girls with free sanitary pads.

The donation is a joint venture between Namdia and an employee at the diamond company, Monica Shapua, who thought it would be a great humanitarian initiative in support of the Namibian girl-child.

A study into the matter has shown that only 17 percent of girls living in rural areas have access to modern sanitary pads which means that the spent several days each month away from school in order to keep their dignity intact.

Namibia’s parliamentarians have called for the provision of free sanitary pads and in this regard the Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Doreen Sioka tabled a motion in the National Assembly during March this year that school-going Namibian girls should be supported by a special campaign that would supply free sanitary pads.

Namdia’s Company Secretary and Legal Advisor, Marvel Tjombonde, said the company donated the sanitary pads through its foundation. She added that the company is delighted to be part of the initiative and that it would continue to strive for the betterment of young Namibians through health, education, and sports.

Tjombonde said that through this donation they hope to help increase the attendance of school amongst young girls that would improve their concentration in school and participation in activities while they pursue their dreams.

She explained that the project is dear to her heart and that this endearment stems from her role as the Chairperson of the Namibia Football Association’s Women Football branch.

“I work closely with girls from all 14 regions with the Galz and Goals project so this initiative is hugely influenced by the work I do with them,” said Tjombonde.

The four charities chosen for the distribution of the sanitary pads include Combat Combined School, Physically Active Youth, Moria Grace Shelter, and the NFA’s Girls Technical Centre.
