Road accidents decrease slightly from 2018

STATISTICS from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF) indicate a slight decrease in road accidents compared to last year but fatalities and injuries reported this year so far, however, exceed last year’s figures between the reporting period of January to September.
According to the Fund’s Chief of Corporate Affairs, Saruhe Gaomas-Guchu, the crashes declined by 6%, injuries increased by 2% and the fatalities increased by 1%. This essentially means that the number of accidents reported last year was 2532 and 2377 road accidents in 2019.
This year, however, a total 3843 injuries was recorded while 3776 were recorded last year.
Additionally, 379 people died in road accidents this year whereas 374 deaths were recorded last year during the same reporting period.

“The Fund reminds the public to report road crashes and have the exact location, the number of people injured, people entrapped in the vehicles and the number of vehicles involved to ensure ease reporting and appropriate assistance,” Gaomas-Guchu said.
Just last week more than ten people died in car accidents.
Of these, a family was killed. The 53-year-old Meriam Sheehama, her 30–year-old daughter, Sylvia Tuhafeni Gideon and Sylvia’s two daughters, Emily Shikongo, 8, and Anneli Iyaloo Ndeshaala Mbinda, who was only one year, died as result of the accident.
The two other people that did not survive the accident were identified as the 20-year-old Gonzales Hoabeb and 30-year-old Ilanza Noleen Kongoro. Hoabeb was the driver of the Toyota Passo that crashed into heavy transport truck before smashing into a barrier next to the road.
Earlier this week, three people died in a car accident when a pickup bakkie fell from a bridge between Otjiwarongo and Kalkfeld. Another accident involving a Truck between Buitepos and Gobabis was recorded.
Two people died in an accident between Grootfontein and Tsumeb on Wednesday night.
