THE 48-year-old Jeremia van Wyk, a convicted murderer and rapist, is again in custody at the Wanaheda police station after he abducted and raped a girl aged five on Thursday.
Van Wyk, also known as Boesman, is accused of abducting the victim from a pre-school in Khomasdal at about 13:00 on Thursday. He was arrested about six hours later along Shangai Street in the same neighbourhood with the girl still inside the car he was using. This after members of the family and friends from the Khomasdal community launched a frantic search for her in Windhoek.
Van Wyk, who was released from jail about two years ago after serving a sentence for murder and rape, was initially arrested on a charge of abduction but was later also charged with rape of the girl after an examination by a doctor revealed that she was indeed sexually assaulted.
The family of the little girl launched a frantic search for her after they found out from the school that an unknown man picked her up at the start of the lunch hour.
A brother of the victim’s father said Van Wyk used to be romantically involved with the sister of the victim’s mother and that he, up until a few weeks ago, stayed in a garden apartment at the victim’s house in Khomasdal.
According to the family member, the suspect was eventually kicked out of the flat about three weeks ago following differences with his landlord.
The search for the victim involved members of the Namibian Police, as well as the community. They knocked on doors and walked down dry riverbeds until after dark. The search was only called off after the girl was found in the car with Van Wyk by one of the many search parties scouring the city for her.
A brother of the suspect, who visited him in the holding cells after his arrest, said Van Wyk told him that he was drinking heavily for the entire day and that he even used drugs after abducting and raping the little girl.
Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi of the Namibian Police’s Public Relations Division confirmed the arrest of the suspect and that he was charged with rape of the girl.
Shikwambi also confirmed that the suspect served time in prison on charges of rape and murder and stated that he will appear on the new charge of rape in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
