A record third match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup tournament was abandoned after rain bowled the game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka for a duck.
This was the second successive time in the ongoing World Cup where Sri Lanka was forced to split points. Their previous match against Pakistan was also called off due to rain.
Both the teams came into the match with one win from three matches and now each will get a point for the washout. Sri Lanka now have four points from as many games, while Bangladesh have three points from four games. After two defeats, Bangladesh was also looking for a resurgence against Sri Lanka but now face diminishing opportunities to reach the semifinal stage of the tournament.
Rain is forecast at Taunton on Wednesday where Australia is scheduled to play Pakistan, and also on Thursday at Trent Bridge, where India will face New Zealand.
The forecast seems to be slightly better for England’s meeting with the West Indies at Southampton on Friday.
