THE Namibian President, Dr. Hage Geingob, congratulated the African National Congress under President Cyril Ramaphosa with its resounding victory in the South African National and Provincial Elections.
“I congratulate our sister movement, the African National Congress under President Cyril M. Ramaphosa, for the decisive electoral victory. SWAPO and the ANC are bound by a history of struggle and sacrifice for the benefit our people. We look forward to years of friendship and cooperation as we drive our countries towards shared prosperity. Amandla Awethu!” President Geingob said in a post on his personal social media platforms.
Namibians like the rest of the world have been watching live updates on various news channels for the past three days to see if the ANC’s reformist president could consolidate his hold on power.
Although the ANC was set to record its worst performance in a national election since 1994, the decline was less steep than some analysts had predicted, leaving President Ramaphosa in a stronger position to fend off party rivals.
With most of the ballots counted, the ANC garnered more than 57 percent of the vote which puts the South African ruling party five points below the numbers it achieved in the previous National and Provincial Elections in 2014.
