Peugeot owners in Namibia left stranded

THE owners of Peugeot vehicles in Namibia have been left stranded with nonexistent after sales service following a dispute between the sole agent in the country and the parent company in South Africa.
According to Pieter Senekal, Managing Director of Spes Bona Motor Company who had the agency to sell and service the French vehicle brand in Namibia, the trouble with the parent company started in March when he gave them official notice that he wants to end his contract with Peugeot South Africa.
Senekal said that it stipulates in the contract that the agent has to give the parent company 12 months notice if and when if he chooses to end the venture.
“I gave them official notice in March and within a few weeks they came back with legal letters prohibiting me from doing any further business under the brand.”
He said many of his clients are now without support from the car maker.
“There is no other agent in Namibia which leaves existing clients in the lurch. I have to order parts for clients from other vendors because under the current restriction, I am not allowed to buy directly from the factory in South Africa as I used to do before this dispute.”
Senekal said he still has cars and certain parts in stock that he is allowed to sell after the South African company issued him with an order to stop doing so.
He indicated that the matter is now the subject of a court case where it has to be determined if he would be allowed to do business under the brand until the end of the 12 month period as stipulated in the agency contract.
