NAMIBIANS will enjoy the benefits that come with prolonged passport validity, as cabinet earlier this week authorised the increase of the validity of the three category passports from five years to ten years.
Information Minister Stanley Simataa announced at a media briefing this afternoon that the extension period applies to the national passports, diplomatic and official passports.
The home affairs ministry recently received backlash from the public for a lack of passport issuing, due to a lack of the usual green passport paper.
The ministry announced in May that it is experiencing a low stock of passports, and that it would prioritise students studying abroad, as well as business people.
As such, brown passports have instead been issued as an alternative.
The brown ones are, however,e not recognised in all European countries and countries in the Americas.
Namibia now joins countries like India, whose passport periods expire in ten years upon issuing.
