The 57-year-old Francis Kawana, a resident of Walvis Bay, died on the scene of a motor vehicle accident after the car he was driving collided against the concrete buttress under the bridge on the outskirts of Karibib on the way to Okahandja.
According to the official police report about the tragic incident, Kawana was driving from Karibib to Okahandja while he had his nine-year-old granddaughter with him in the car. It is further alleged that he lost control over the vehicle and drove into the buttresses on the underside of the bridge. After crashing into the concrete structure, the car overturned trapping the victims inside.
Kawana succumbed to his injuries while still trapped inside the wreckage of the car.
Emergency workers were able to free his injured granddaughter, Bonde Kawana, from the wreck and she was transported to the Usakos State Hospital for further stabilisation and care.
The actual cause of the accident is currently under investigation but according to the police report it is speculated that the deceased person swerved from the road to avoid a collision with a wild animal in the road.
