THE much anticipated Omagongo Cultural Festival 2019 kicks off at Ongandjera King Johannes Mupiya’s palace at Uukwandongo village in the Omusati Region tomorrow afternoon.
It is a two-day event.
The first day of the festival will be made of presentations by experts on culture and history as well as entertainment by traditional dancers and musicians.
The main event takes place Saturday with vice president Nangolo Mbumba as keynote speaker.
Founding president Sam Nujoma, who is the patron of the festival, will also deliver a speech.
The Omagongo Cultural Festival takes place annually.
Although hosted by the eight traditional authorities of the Aawambo ethnic group on a rotational basis, it is a national event and is even recognized internationally as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
The festival brings people together to socialize and to enjoy fermented marula juice, known as omagongo or omaongo in local vernaculars.
Feast-goers are entertained by traditional dancers and the event serves as platform to exchange ideas and to transmit customary norms and traditions to the younger generation.
