NAMWATER has suspended water supply to the Okarui Village in the Okakarara Constituency for the past seven month due to an amount of N$80 000 that is outstanding to the Namibian Water Corporation.
Okakarara Constituency Councillor, Vetaruhe Kandorozu, said villagers are using water meters from Namwater and that the Deputy Minister of Marginalised Communities in the Office of the President has not paid the water bill on behalf of the residents.
“We have tried to call for meetings with the Rural Water supply office and the Ministry but they haven’t come forth with a solution to arrange with the payments now the community have to travel quite a distance to fetch water from nearby towns,” said Kandorozu.
Namwater’s Corporate Communication Officer, Johannes Shigwedha, confirmed that the company have suspended water usage of the Okarui Village because they don’t want the water account to pile up.
Shigwedha said they want someone to take responsibility for the water payment because the water was freely given to the San community and the community has misused the water consumption.
“We are waiting for payments or arrangement to be made before reconnecting the water supply to the residents of Okarui”, he noted
Okarui village were often cut off from the rest of the Okakarara Constituency during the rainy season due to the flooding Omatako River running between Okarui and Okakarara.
