THE Ohangwena Region is this year’s host of the Regional Councils Sports Tournament that will officially kick off Monday next week at the Eenhana Sports Stadium.
All 14 Regional Councils and the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development will be competing in football, netball, volleyball, tug-of-war and athletics in the week-long competition.
The games aim to promote wellness, physical activity, team building and interaction between regional council employees.
According to the Ohangwena Regional Council spokesperson Panduleni Nepembe the event is part of the Public Service’s wellness program whereby all the 14 Regional Councils, the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development and the Association of Regional councils compete in different sport codes.
“The tournament is for all 14 regional councils,” said Nepembe.
Last year, the tournament was held in the Omaheke Region.
The Khomas Region hosted the maiden edition of the annual event in Windhoek in 2016, while Zambezi hosted the tourney in Katima Mulilo in 2017.
The Minister of Urban and Rural development, Peya Mushelenga is expected to officiate at the official opening, under the theme “Improve Productivity through Sport.”
The tournament ends on 13 September.
