THE Namibian police in the Ohangwena region have this morning arrested a 21-year-old taxi driver accused of statutory rape.
It is alleged that he picked up a 13-years-old female resident of Okambebe village who was returning from school at Ongenga Friday afternoon, but failed to drop her off at her destination.
The two eventually ended up in the driver’s sleeping room at Engela in the Helao Nafidi town where they arrived at around 21:00 and spent the night together.
According to police spokesperson Abner Kaume Itumba, worried parents spent Friday night trying to trace their missing daughter, to no avail.
The girl only returned home on Saturday morning, alleging that she was raped.
However, the information at the disposal of the police appears to imply the existence of some kind of agreement between the victim and the suspect.
Itumba said that when she was picked up at Ongenga, the taxi travelled via Okambebe – her destination – to Onandjaba where other commuters were dropped off.
Then the taxi picked up other commuters and again drove via Okambebe to Engela and once again the victim did not insist on being dropped off at her destination.
Itumba is adamant that whether there was or not an agreement between the victim and the suspect is immaterial because the victim is a minor, way below the age of consent.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Ohangwena magistrate’s court tomorrow.
