No decision taken to liquidate Air Nam – Masule

Business Reporter

THE interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Namibia, Xavier Masule, says that the national airline’s operations will continue uninterrupted, as there is no official decision to liquidate the state-owned enterprise.

In a press statement, Masule stated that there is no decision taken by the shareholders, government and the Board to close Air Namibia, nor is there any pending application for the liquidation of Air Namibia by the end of September 2019 as reported in the media.

In a letter dated 28 August 2019, the airline’s former board chairperson Deidré Sauls-Deckenbrock advised government that the national airline could shut down if it does not get a N$1,6 billion bailout by the end of this month.

Masule has, however, countered that the national airline is receiving assistance from its shareholder as per the budgetary provision and allocation as announced at the beginning of the current financial year

“Air Namibia shall continue to fly as per the published schedule for the foreseeable future,” Masule said.

He further explained that as a business that is in operation, the airline procures goods and services continuously.

“Services and goods acquired must be paid for in line with the terms of conditions of the suppliers. This process results in situations where at times the airline falls behind with payment of some of the invoices, as it is with any normal business entity. In cases where some invoices are in arrears, the airline has entered into payment arrangements with the relevant suppliers,” Masule said.

He added that the Air Namibia was established with the mandate to provide air transport services, to promote tourism and encourage business investment in Namibia and that the airline has been meeting this objective optimally.
