A MARIENTAL man who admitted to killing the mother of his child by repeatedly stabbing her was today sentenced to an effective 32 years.
Hendrick Uirab fatally stabbed Katrina Rooi at a cemetery in Mariental in 2017.
In admitting guilt, Uirab at the time said that his jealousy was triggered when he saw Rooi sitting on her ex-boyfriend’s lap.
He allegedly dragged his victim from a house party to the town’s cemetery, where he killed her.
Although his version is that he was still dating Rooi at the time of her death, the state argued the they had in fact broken up at the time of the murder and that Rooi had rekindled her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Gerson Kooper.
Initially, Uirab was also charged with attempted murder for hitting Kooper with a panga. On this charge, however, Judge Dinah Usiku acquitted him as the state failed to prove the allegation beyond reasonable doubt. Uirab had at all times denied that he had a panga that night and that he was only in possession of a knife.
