AFRICA Cup of Nations debutants, Madagascar managed to hold on to their unbeaten record of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament by beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo on penalty shootouts.
The victory for Madagascar means that they will progress to the quarterfinal stage of the AFCON championship in Egypt.
The Malagasies took an early lead in the match when Ibrahim Amada scored the first goal after only nine minutes of play.
Cedric Bakambu scored the equaliser for the DRC 12 minutes later and the first half ended with the score at 1 – 1 in the round of 16 match.
Faneva Ima Andriatsima scored Madagascar’s second goal in the 77th minute of play but the islanders could not hold on to their lead. Chancel Mbemba Mangulu scored the equaliser for the DRC in the dying seconds of the second half.
The match went to extra time and Malagasy goalkeeper had to work overtime as the DRC kept on sniping at their opponents’ goal. The sustained attack did not pay off and the match went to penalty shootouts.
Madgascar succeeded with four penalty kicks while the DRC could only put two shots in the back of the net.
