ELIASER Nghipangelwa, the Mayor of Helao Nafidi, has urged people to invest in the Kapuka multi discipline sports tournament to unite people for a good cause.
Soccer, volleyball, basketball, netball and even a marathon will be some of the sport codes that will be promoted and form part of the big event.
Speaking during the draw of the tournament held at Oshikango on Saturday, Nghipangelwa said events such the Kapuka event could create jobs if there are enough sponsorships and requested the big private companies to rally behind the tournament in the future.
The Coca-Cola Company this year sponsored the tournament to the tune of N$150 000 in cash and kinds, announced the Marketing and Promotion Manager of the event, Sammy Mushelenga, during the draw.
“The Coca-Cola sponsorship is committed to the school teams only and we still have to solicit sponsorships for community teams,” said Mushelenga.
The Kapuka tournament was first initiated in 1996 with the aim of bringing all sport lovers in the North together.
He also noted that 24 schools from the region such as Ohangwena, Zambezi, Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto and Khomas have so far confirmed their participation in all sports codes of their event.
Education Director in the Ohangwena Region, Isaack Hamatwi, said the tournament is now in its 23rd year and said that the event is no longer a baby that has grown in popularity and is still relevant.
“It is now an adult tournament which has improved in quality and quantity due to the management’s commitment to the goal of improving conditions,” said Hamatwi.
He added that sport, be it soccer, athletics or volleyball is a wonderful means of exercise and entertainment.
Hamatwi said that if nations want peace and harmony in their country, they should invest in sports.
He was of the opinion that sport has the ability to instill discipline, as teams are reprimanded for committing bad behavior on the field.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from 21 to 23 June at the Ponhofi Secondary School’s Sport Field.
Besides Coca Cola, Old Mutual, Hotel Destiny, Omafo Filling Station, T.Ehafo Wholesale, S Diski Lounge, O.N Kandjala Trading CC and 777 Investment are also sponsoring the annual sports tournament.
