NAMIBIAN conservationist Dr Laurie Marker is helping raise awareness about the threat of genetic isolation facing South Africa\u2019s cheetah populations through a new documentary that follows efforts to protect the species’ long-term survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The documentary, Return of the Cheetah 3: Bloodlines, explores how fenced game reserves have separated cheetah populations, limiting their ability to find unrelated mates and increasing the risk of inbreeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marker, founder and Executive Director of the Namibia-based Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), will present the documentary alongside global partner JETOUR at an exclusive launch event in South Africa on 6 November, ahead of its scheduled premiere on 7 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While fenced game reserves provide protection for wildlife, they can also prevent cheetahs from moving freely between areas. This separation limits genetic diversity, which is important for maintaining healthy populations and ensuring the species’ survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Namibia, cheetahs can travel long distances across open landscapes to find mates. However, isolated populations in South Africa’s fenced reserves have fewer opportunities to breed with unrelated cheetahs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The documentary follows conservationists as they relocate cheetahs between reserves to improve genetic diversity and strengthen isolated populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe cheetah\u2019s long-term survival depends on genetic health,\u201d Marker said. \u201cBloodlines highlights what it takes to actively manage these family lines and give the species a real chance at a future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Return of the Cheetah 3: Bloodlines is the third instalment in an internationally distributed documentary series produced in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery and JETOUR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first documentary followed Marker and the CCF team in Namibia as they rehabilitated and released an orphaned cheetah named Jet back into the wild. It premiered on Discovery Channel on International Cheetah Day on 4 December 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second instalment, Return of the Cheetah: Horn of Africa, premiered on 20 December 2025 and focused on the illegal wildlife trade. It followed the rescue and care of cheetah cubs confiscated from the illegal pet trade in Somaliland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The series is presented by naturalist Hazen Audel and highlights conservation efforts to protect cheetahs through research, education and practical interventions. It has received several international awards, including recognition at the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards and the Telly Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CCF was founded by Marker in 1990 and is headquartered in Namibia, with a field base in Somaliland. The organisation works to protect wild cheetah populations through research, habitat restoration, efforts to reduce human-wildlife conflict and campaigns against the illegal wildlife trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest documentary is scheduled to broadcast across southern Africa on Saturday, 7 November 2026, at 20:30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
