THE National Assembly demonstrated a rare moment of unity during a debate on a motion of solidarity with Cuba and its people amidst a decades-long US embargo and sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The earlier disruptive and chaotic Assembly debates that was characterised by walkouts and shouting matches and a failed opposition front to table a motion of no confidence against the Speaker. Dr. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila proposed various suggestions on how Namibia and its people can assist the US-strangled Cuban nation who played a decisive role in Namibian independence and the end of the war in 1989, and has provided continuous support for the past 36 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prime Minister Dr Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare moved the motion in the National Assembly today during the Fourth Session of the Eighth Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The motion expressed Parliament\u2019s concern that the embargo continues to place severe constraints on Cuba\u2019s economy, affecting trade, investment, access to financial services, medicines, food, technology and other essential goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parliament reaffirmed its position that unilateral coercive measures are contrary to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, arguing that such measures undermine the sovereign equality of states and interfere with nations\u2019 rights to determine their own political, economic and social systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The motion further called for Cuba\u2019s removal from unilateral lists that impose additional restrictions on its economic and financial interactions with the international community, including restrictions affecting its ability to purchase oil on international markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parliament also condemned the recent indictment by the United States Administration of former Cuban President and Army General Ra\u00fal Castro, describing it as political interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ngurare said Namibia supports dialogue, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and constructive diplomatic engagement among nations as the most effective means of resolving differences and promoting international peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said relations between states should be guided by sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, mutual respect and adherence to international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parliament also commended the resilience, dignity and perseverance demonstrated by the Cuban people in the face of long-standing challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It expressed confidence that, through unity, determination and international solidarity, Cuba would continue advancing its social and economic development and safeguarding achievements in areas including education, healthcare, science and international solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The motion reaffirmed Namibia\u2019s enduring friendship with Cuba and pledged continued efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation and solidarity in pursuit of a more just, equitable and peaceful world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The National Assembly adjourned as time became a factor and will resume the motion on Tuesday, 22 September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
