NAMIBIA suffered a 99-run defeat to South Africa in a rain-affected first ODI in Windhoek on Wednesday, with the Proteas’ formidable 348\/6 and disciplined bowling attack proving too much for the hosts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chasing a revised target of 262 from 31 overs after two rain interruptions, Namibia struggled to build momentum and finished on 162\/8, handing South Africa victory by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Africa had earlier laid the foundation for the victory through a record-equalling 150 from Jordan Hermann on ODI debut, while Tony de Zorzi contributed 72 as the pair helped the Proteas post a commanding total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Namibia’s bowlers struggled to contain the South African batting line-up, although Ruben Trumpelmann was the standout performer with three wickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hosts’ chase got off to a steady start, with Alexander Volschenk and Malan Kruger putting on 51 for the opening wicket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Volschenk made 15 off 34 balls before he was caught behind off Kwena Maphaka in the 14th over, while Kruger battled for 34 off 60 deliveries before being trapped lbw by Prenelan Subrayen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jan Frylinck was then bowled by Maphaka for seven, leaving Namibia 66\/2 before Kruger followed soon after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Louren Steenkamp contributed nine before he was caught at mid-wicket off Corbin Bosch, leaving Namibia four wickets down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Captain Gerhard Erasmus briefly raised hopes of a fightback with a six and a four off successive deliveries from Bosch, but his innings ended on 21 when he was caught and bowled by Subrayen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zane Green made 11 before he was caught behind point off Duan Jansen, while JJ Smit provided the most aggressive resistance with 31 off 20 balls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smit struck three sixes and three fours before he was caught at long-on off Subrayen, who then bowled Jack Brassell for a duck with the next delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Subrayen finished with excellent figures of 4\/26 from 5.3 overs, while Maphaka took 2\/36.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Namibia’s cautious approach during the early stages of the chase left them with little room to manoeuvre once the required run rate increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rain interruptions further reduced the chase, first to 38 overs and eventually to 31, with Namibia set a revised target of 262.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the difficult circumstances, the hosts were unable to generate the required scoring rate and lost wickets at regular intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, South Africa’s innings was built around Hermann’s outstanding debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The opener reached his maiden ODI century from 93 balls before eventually falling for 150 off 126 deliveries, equalling Matthew Breetzke’s record for the highest score by a South African on ODI debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hermann also became only the fifth South African batter to score a century on ODI debut, joining Colin Ingram, Temba Bavuma, Reeza Hendricks and Breetzke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
De Zorzi’s 72 provided further stability, while Dewald Brevis scored 33 before Namibia fought back through Trumpelmann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trumpelmann claimed three wickets, but South Africa finished strongly, with Corbin Bosch unbeaten on 45 from 25 balls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Proteas added 44 runs in the final three overs to reach 348\/6 from their 50 overs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking after the match, Hermann was delighted to have contributed to South Africa’s victory on his ODI debut, describing the record-equalling score as a special achievement but emphasising the importance of the team result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Namibia captain Erasmus admitted that his side was never really in the contest, particularly after failing to build sufficient momentum during the opening stages of the chase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said he had no regrets about choosing to bowl first at the toss and pointed to some positives with both bat and ball, while stressing the importance of the remaining matches in Namibia’s broader World Cup qualification campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Africa captain Bjorn Fortuin praised his side’s start to the series and singled out Hermann’s innings, saying the team would look to build on the momentum from the victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The result gives South Africa a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second ODI will be played at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on Friday, with the match scheduled to start at 09:30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
