Windhoek, Namibian artist Tuli Mekondjo beckons viewers into a transient performance, as the sounds of typewriters, steam train engines thundering through the hinterlands, and the ghostly winds of the Namib Desert come to life on a projector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dance performance, accompanied by archival photos and recordings, narrates tales of the evacuation of thousands of Namibians to concentration camps such as Shark Island, where the harsh elements of nature would eventually terminate their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The showcase, titled Eshina Iyo ku topa topa (Typewriter), speaks of the machine that goes topa topa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Scherz Collection, Basler Afrika Bibliographien, Basel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mekondjo said that the stories of the Namibian ancestors were written on typewriters. &#8220;One day I thought, wouldn&#8217;t it be interesting to merge the images and sounds of the archives, the trains and the typewriters? During colonial times our stories were written on typewriters. The people were placed on wagons to be transported from Swakopmund to L\u00fcderitz. The sounds are from the Humboldt Forum, which houses acoustic archives,&#8221; Mekondjo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The performance formed part of the opening of an art symposium titled Namibia and Germany: A New Ethics of Cooperation, which delves into mainstream museum cooperation. The theme outlined that exchanges between museums have often replicated colonial power structures by leaving ownership, authority and the terms of engagement in the hands of former colonial institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new ethics of cooperation argue that cooperation must not begin with what must be shared, but with what can be returned, repaired or relinquished. The project will also include a pop-up exhibition, as well as a publication, towards the end of December 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symposium, held at the Creative Industry Institute Africa (CIIA), situated on the mountains behind Windhoek High School, hosted academics in history, anthropology, museology and the arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speakers such as Dr Aziz Sandja, Curator of Africa Collections at the Museum am Rothenbaum (MARKK) in Hamburg, Germany, outlined that MARKK, founded in 1879, forms part of one of the largest ethnographic museums in Germany, hosting approximately 200,000 objects and 450,000 photographs, many of which are from Namibia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Sandja stated that the museum hosted approximately 2,063 Namibian artefacts, of which about 1,587 are still preserved or held, the rest were lost during the Second World War. The museum&#8217;s collections were acquired from merchants, traders, colonial officers and missionaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another speaker, Gabriel Schimmeroth, the Head of Public Programming and Curating at MARKK, warned that restitution should not be viewed through the lens of the &#8220;dumping&#8221; of colonial objects back into the hands of former colonies and treated as closure, but rather as an opportunity to foster better relations through interacting with these objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buhle Ndhlovu, one of the project leaders, posed questions such as whether museums of the future will be held in high esteem based on the number of colonial objects they possess or the relations they build.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Entertainment Reporter ATOP the towering hills of Windhoek, Namibian artist Tuli Mekondjo beckons viewers into a transient performance, as the sounds of typewriters, steam train engines thundering through the hinterlands, and the ghostly winds of the Namib Desert come to life on a projector.
