{"id":396759,"date":"2026-06-25T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=396759"},"modified":"2026-06-24T20:24:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T18:24:01","slug":"oshikoto-region-records-35-5-spike-in-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=396759","title":{"rendered":"Oshikoto Region records 35.5% spike in crime"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff Reporter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THE Governor of the Oshikoto Region, Sacky Kathindi, has expressed concern over the region&#8217;s rising crime rate, revealing that reported crime increased by 404 cases \u2014 a 35.5% rise between the 2024\/2025 and 2025\/2026 financial years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He made these remarks during his recent State of the Region Address (SORA) in Omuthiya, which aimed to provide an overview of the region\u2019s challenges and achievements over the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kathindi revealed that a total of 1,541 crimes were registered in the Oshikoto Region during the 2025\/2026 financial year, compared to 1,137 cases recorded in the previous year. He noted that the most prevalent offence during the period was assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), with 945 cases recorded, compared to 567 in the preceding financial year. The second most common crime in the region during the period under review was stock theft, with 200 cases recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, in comparison to the previous year, when 269 cases were recorded, stock theft decreased,\u201d Kathindi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rape cases, however, increased from 132 during the 2024\/2025 financial year to 187 in the 2025\/2026 financial year, representing an increase of 41.7%. He further revealed that drug-related cases rose from 87 to 159 during the same period, while murder cases increased from 13 to 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA close analysis of these statistics reveals that crimes occurring within our homes and social settings, such as GBH, domestic violence, rape, drug-related offences, and even murder, are increasing at an alarming rate. It is reported that many rape victims are minors and underage children who are left in the care of male domestic workers or relatives who ultimately breach that trust. This is deeply concerning.
