THE Speaker of the National Assembly, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, said that while commemorating history is important, Namibia must remain committed to addressing the unresolved issues of recognition and reparations relating to the genocide committed between 1904 and 1908.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs the National Assembly, we are mindful that the work of remembrance carries obligations. Commemorating this history is necessary, but it is not sufficient in itself. Our commitment must extend to the unresolved questions of recognition and reparation that remain on the national agenda. The 2021 joint declaration between Namibia and Germany represented a step forward, but Namibia has made clear that the concerns raised during the negotiations must be fully reflected in the declaration and its implementation to ensure closure to the horrific chapter of genocide and true justice for the affected communities and the Namibian nation. It is only then that healing and true reconciliation can take place. That position deserves to be taken seriously and acted upon,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She made these remarks as part of the commemoration of Namibia\u2019s Genocide Memorial Day. She stressed that the National Assembly reaffirms its collective responsibility to pursue justice and reconciliation on the genocide issue through practical and ongoing commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDealing with the genocide issue is not a formality. It requires that we approach all injustices with equal seriousness and equal will to address their consequences. The National Assembly represents the full breadth of Namibian society, and it is from that position that we affirm our collective responsibility to pursue justice and reconciliation as practical and ongoing commitments, not merely aspirations,\u201d Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also encouraged younger generations of Namibians to engage with the country\u2019s history, describing it as essential to understanding both the challenges and strengths of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKnowing the history of the 1904\u20131908 genocide, the people who resisted, those who survived, and those who did not, is not separate from being an informed and engaged citizen. It is part of it. We encourage young Namibians to seek out that history and reflect on what it asks of us today. We extend our respect to the affected communities on this day, and to all Namibians who carry this history. The National Assembly remains committed to the principles of justice, dignity and accountability that this occasion represents,\u201d Kuugongelwa-Amadhila added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
