THE Windhoek City Police Service (WCPS) has raised concern over a growing number of domestic violence cases reported in the capital, particularly during weekends when incidents are often linked to alcohol abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the WCPS, more than 290 domestic violence cases have been registered since January 2026, although authorities believe the actual number may be significantly higher due to many victims being reluctant to report abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police explained that domestic violence continues to affect many households and can take various forms, including emotional, physical and financial abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn many of the incidents attended to by the police, alcohol abuse remains a significant contributing factor,\u201d the WCPS said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The service added that alcohol consumption frequently contributes to arguments among family members that escalate into violent confrontations, sometimes resulting in serious injuries and even loss of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police further warned that the impact of domestic violence extends beyond those directly involved, often leaving children traumatised by the incidents they witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The WCPS urged victims of abuse to report incidents to the police and allow the law to take its course, stressing that reporting violence is an important step in breaking the cycle of abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The service also encouraged neighbours, friends and relatives to report suspected domestic violence incidents on behalf of victims where necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Windhoek City Police Service remains committed to providing the necessary assistance to both victims and perpetrators to help prevent these incidents, and will continue working closely with stakeholders to ensure that peace and dignity are restored in the community,\u201d the WCPS said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
