THE National Assembly today adjourned its proceedings in honour of the late Member of Parliament, James Unomasa Uerikua, following his tragic death in a motor vehicle accident last week, which also claimed the life of his son. Lawmakers observed a minute of silence, while tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, describing Uerikua as a dedicated leader, unifier, and rising figure in Namibian politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Announcing the development in the House, Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said it was with deep sadness that the Assembly received news of Uerikua\u2019s passing on Friday, 3 April 2026. Uerikua served as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on International Relations, Defence and Security and was a former Governor of the Otjozondjupa Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She informed members that a formal motion to place on record the House\u2019s regret and convey condolences will be tabled on Thursday, 9 April. Following consultations among chief whips, it was agreed that no further business would be conducted, and the House adjourned until the following day. Proceedings are set to resume with the State of the Nation Address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Members of Parliament across party lines paid tribute to Uerikua, remembering him as a committed public servant and a unifying figure. National Democratic Party leader Martin Lukato described him as a kind, active, and brilliant young parliamentarian who participated meaningfully in both regional and national platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Swapo MP Fenny Tutjavi highlighted his intelligence and leadership, particularly in the International Relations, Defence and Security Committee, where he served as chairperson. She said he was a mentor who believed in the potential of young people and provided them with opportunities to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Affirmative Repositioning MP Ester Haikola recalled Uerikua\u2019s inclusive leadership style, saying he valued relationships and ensured that all voices were heard in decision-making processes. She added that Namibia had lost not only a leader but also a source of guidance and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Swapo MP Christine Haindaka described his passing as deeply personal, adding that he was a close confidant and a strategic influence in her life. She said he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire both young and old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Popular Democratic Movement leader McHenry Venaani said Parliament would never be the same, describing Uerikua as a great parliamentarian and leader whose potential was cut short too soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Secretary of the National Assembly said Uerikua was a bridge-builder who fostered unity across political divides and remained committed to a shared vision of national development and economic progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In her tribute, Speaker Kuugongelwa-Amadhila described Uerikua as a towering political figure despite his young age, whose life reflected loyalty, humility, and dedicated service to both his family and the nation. She said his passing is a profound loss not only to his family, but also to Parliament and the country at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
