VICE President Lucia Witbooi has called for stronger action against gender-based violence and greater solidarity with vulnerable communities, while addressing the Women\u2019s World Day of Prayer gathering in Windhoek on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at the event held in Windhoek, Witbooi said the day serves as an opportunity for reflection, unity and renewed commitment to addressing social challenges affecting women and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The gathering formed part of the global Women\u2019s World Day of Prayer movement, which brings together Christian women from more than 180 countries and regions to pray and reflect on issues affecting society. This year\u2019s theme, \u201cI Will Give You Rest: Come,\u201d is drawn from the Biblical passage Matthew 11:28\u201330.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Witbooi said the scripture reminds believers of Christ\u2019s invitation to those who are burdened and in need of spiritual renewal, hope and inner peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She highlighted the important role played by churches in Namibia\u2019s history, particularly the Council of Churches in Namibia, which she said has long been a moral voice for justice, freedom and human dignity. Established in 1978, the council played a significant role during the country\u2019s liberation struggle and continues to advocate for social justice and the empowerment of marginalised communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Vice President said Namibia continues to face serious social challenges, particularly Gender-Based Violence, which she described as a painful reality affecting families and communities across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBehind every statistic lies a human life \u2014 a daughter, a mother, a sister, or a child \u2014 each one valuable and created in the image of God,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Witbooi urged churches and faith-based organisations to continue providing care and support to survivors of violence while also challenging harmful cultural practices and attitudes that perpetuate abuse and discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also encouraged faith communities to translate prayer into action, noting that churches should remain places not only of worship but also of healing, reconciliation and transformation within society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Vice President further called on the Council of Churches in Namibia and its member churches to remain active partners in promoting justice, compassion and respect in communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Witbooi said the day also highlights the experiences of women globally, including those in Nigeria, where many still face barriers to education, economic opportunities and leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In concluding her address, the Vice President said unity, compassion and shared responsibility remain key to building a society where all people can live free from violence, fear and discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
