THE Municipal Council of Windhoek has approved a comprehensive action plan to fast-track pothole repairs ahead of the rainy season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, potholes in Windhoek result from a combination of factors, including poor drainage, ageing pavements, high traffic volumes, climate cycles, and inadequate historical maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lydia Amutenya, Public Relations Officer within the City of Windhoek, explained that with an ageing paved network of approximately 883 kilometres, much of which has exceeded its design lifespan, the City faces a significant maintenance backlog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Currently, 16% of road surfaces and 18% of structural layers are rated in poor to very poor condition. The estimated funding requirement to address the backlog in flexible pavements stands at N$2.67 billion. Despite these challenges, the City has repaired over 36,135 potholes to date across all streets,” Amutenya concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
