{"id":379035,"date":"2025-07-23T21:46:26","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T19:46:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=379035"},"modified":"2025-07-23T21:46:29","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T19:46:29","slug":"bon-unveils-re-imagined-notes-and-coins-introduces-20-cent-coin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=379035","title":{"rendered":"BoN unveils re-imagined notes and coins, introduces 20-cent coin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maria David<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THE Bank of Namibia (BoN) officially unveiled re-imagined banknotes and coins on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a significant change to the nation&#8217;s currency, the central bank also introduced a new 20-cent coin and announced the phasing out of the 5-cent coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said this historic milestone solidified the newfound sovereignty and transformed Namibia into a nation that could proudly declare its economic independence through its own currency, the Namibian Dollar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"557\" src=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/523530819_18063361301264715_2261216081915792141_n-1024x557.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-379037\" srcset=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/523530819_18063361301264715_2261216081915792141_n-1024x557.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/523530819_18063361301264715_2261216081915792141_n-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/523530819_18063361301264715_2261216081915792141_n-768x417.jpg 768w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/523530819_18063361301264715_2261216081915792141_n-552x300.jpg 552w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/523530819_18063361301264715_2261216081915792141_n-310x169.jpg 310w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/523530819_18063361301264715_2261216081915792141_n-150x82.jpg 150w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/523530819_18063361301264715_2261216081915792141_n.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photo: Bank of Namibia (BoN)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nandi-Ndaitwah made the remarks during the 35th-anniversary celebration of the Bank of Namibia, an occasion that also marked the launch of Namibia&#8217;s upgraded banknote and new coinage series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, central banks are renowned for trust and integrity, not just the supply of banknotes and coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She indicated that the Bank of Namibia is entrusted not only with improving access to affordable financial services but also with promoting financial inclusion and supporting economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the years, we have seen the Bank drive its Digital Transformation Agenda aimed at democratising financial services, coupled with enhancing efficiencies and improving service delivery,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the banknotes and coins have been aligned with international best practices, as evidenced by the adjustments made to the sizes and materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President explained that the new design aims not only to improve durability but also to ensure that the currency remains modern, practical, and in line with global standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further, Nandi-Ndaitwah said each note remains a powerful national symbol, representing the collective spirit of courage, sacrifice, and resilience that defines the journey as a nation. Moreover, from an inclusivity perspective, the upgraded banknotes incorporate enhanced features designed to better support visually impaired and partially sighted members of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the past thirty-five years, the Bank has intentionally cultivated this trust through prudent monetary policy, maintaining price stability, and ensuring that our currency serves as a reliable store of value and medium of exchange,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nandi-Ndaitwah indicated that currency is not just a national symbol. Currency plays an important role in facilitating trade and commerce, attracting investment, and driving economic growth and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She stressed that the upgraded banknotes continue to honour Namibian heroes\u2014Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi, a distinguished pioneer and stalwart in the fight against colonial oppression, and the late Founding President and Father of the Namibian Nation, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President emphasised that the Namibian Dollar is stable, fosters public confidence in government policies, and provides ordinary Namibians with both opportunities and access to the formal banking sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nandi-Ndaitwah said that it is important that when the country&#8217;s money retains its value, Namibians can save, invest, and engage in the formal banking sector with confidence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maria David THE Bank of Namibia (BoN) officially unveiled re-imagined banknotes and coins on Wednesday evening.
