THE Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR) has announced the immediate lifting of the importation and transit ban on maize, maize products, palm, and palm products from South Africa, excluding maize seeds for planting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to an MAWLR statement, the decision to lift the ban follows extensive research regarding the detection of Bud Rot of Palms (Phytophthora palmivora) and Goss\u2019s Wilt on Maize (Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis) in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Research conducted and ongoing monitoring revealed that Goss\u2019s Wilt primarily affects maize seed rather than the grain. Similarly, measures related to Bud Rot in palms will be adjusted accordingly,” said the Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n

While the ban has been lifted, the MAWLR advises caution in the importation of the aforementioned plant and plant products to prevent the introduction of harmful plant diseases into Namibia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importers are advised to avoid the movement of potentially affected materials to reduce the risk of introducing these bacteria into the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry said that, as part of the revision, it will update the phytosanitary import requirements for the above-mentioned products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Producers, importers, and members of the public are encouraged to act prudently and follow all guidelines set forth to mitigate risks associated with the introduction of these bacterial diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“All previously issued permits, as well as new permit applications, will be reinstated immediately. However, permits for seeds intended for planting that were previously issued will remain suspended until further notice,” said the MAWLR, adding that it will continue its research and monitoring efforts to incorporate preventative measures for Goss\u2019s Wilt and Bud Rot into Namibia’s phytosanitary protocols, as part of broader preventive measures under the Plant Quarantine Act No. 7 of 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
