{"id":365696,"date":"2024-11-06T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=365696"},"modified":"2024-11-06T17:00:26","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T15:00:26","slug":"logistics-association-expresses-safety-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=365696","title":{"rendered":"Logistics Association expresses safety concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After Namibian truck burned at Mozambique border<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zorena Jantze<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HAROLD Schmidt, the Secretary General of the Namibia Logistics Association, has expressed concern over the safety of Namibian truck drivers after a Namibian truck was set ablaze at the Lebombo border in Mozambique, as violent post-electoral protests continue in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a statement from Nel Snel, the Namibian logistics company whose truck was burned, the incident happened at around 20:00 on 5 November 2024. The Namibian driver managed to escape the truck but is in hiding from violent protestors, with no way to leave, as South African authorities have closed the main border with Mozambique as post-election protests escalate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 720 \/ 1080;\" width=\"720\" controls src=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/mozambique-border-Made-with-Clipchamp.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">VIDEO: Scenes of the Namibian truck that was burned at the Mozambique border. Video: Contributed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company added that they suffered damages of up to N$1 million, as all the frozen fish the truck was carrying was destroyed in the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protests have led to the loss of at least 18 lives across Mozambique amidst the disputed presidential election, which was won by the country\u2019s Frelimo ruling party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South African authorities said that they had to close the Lebombo port of entry in the Mpumalanga province after reports of vehicles being torched on the Mozambique side of the border, citing public safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schmidt, the Secretary General of the Logistics Association in Namibia, said that the incident has destabilised a harmonious business environment. He added that Namibian logistics companies may have to bear the insurance costs of vehicles on their own, as insurance companies could repudiate claims, given the known danger of entering conflict zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further to this, he noted that incidents such as this pose a threat to the Namibian economy, which is heavily dependent on the import of goods, mainly via road freight services. \u201cThe biggest impact on the sector is the element of uncertainty as well as the threat to drivers.
