MINISTER of Information, Communication, and Technology Emma Theofelus said that while technology increases productivity, it is ultimately the human element that drives innovation and ensures sustainable growth.

Theofelus made these remarks during the MTC-Tech Hub Conference held on Wednesday at Ongwediva.

According to Theofelus, reskilling the workforce is crucial to safeguard jobs, even as businesses reengineer their processes to become more tech-enabled.

“As we navigate the complexities of the digital age, it is imperative that our policies not only respond to local needs but also resonate with global standards,” she said.

She added that they are diligently working on several key legislative frameworks to solidify Namibia’s position in the global tech space.

Theofelus encouraged attendees to consider the conference a launching pad for tech-enabled business process reengineering within their organizations.

Moreover, Theofelus indicated that their Cybercrime Bill is currently in the drafting stage. This critical piece of legislation is designed to address the increasing threats posed by cybercriminals.

She explained that as more citizens and businesses connect to the digital world, it is essential to ensure that cyberspace remains safe and secure.

“This bill will provide the necessary legal framework to combat cyber threats, protect our citizens, and safeguard our national digital infrastructure,” she added.

She also added that the Data Protection Bill is now before the Cabinet Committee on Legislation. After extensive consultations, the major components of the bill are aligned with international best practices, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union and standards set by the International Telecommunications Union.

This alignment ensures that Namibia’s data protection standards meet global expectations, boosting confidence in the digital economy and making the nation an attractive destination for foreign investment and collaboration.

“We are also finalizing our National Emergency Telecommunications Plan. This plan is essential to ensure that our communication networks remain resilient during emergencies, thus safeguarding lives, property, and critical infrastructure,” she added.

She emphasized that this is not just a local initiative but part of a global effort to establish robust and responsive telecommunications infrastructure.

MTC Chief Executive Officer Licky Erastus said that the MTC-OATF Tech Hub Conference aims to foster dynamic and efficient tech solutions, prioritize engagement and networking, and provide institutions access to a broader range of knowledge, skills, and expertise.

Erastus said that fostering a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing can accelerate the pace of technological advancement and ensure that Namibia remains at the forefront of innovation.

“To harness the full potential of technology, we need fit-for-purpose digital solutions,” he said.

He added that solutions must be tailored to the unique needs and challenges of the people, communities, and the economy.
