class="wp-block-paragraph">NamWater Chief Executive Officer Abraham Nehemia said that the Etaka-Uuvudhiya canal is not just routine maintenance but a drought relief initiative that underscores the government’s commitment to its people.

Nehemia made these remarks during the opening of the Etaka-Uuvudhiya earth canal on Tuesday in the Omusati Region.

He indicated that the raw water is suitable only for livestock consumption and agricultural purposes.

According to Nehemia, the total cost of this operation is nearly N$3.9 million, generously provided by the Office of the Prime Minister through the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform.

“This financial support enabled us to assess the canal’s condition, undertake necessary repairs, and ultimately restore the flow of life-sustaining water from the Olushandja Dam to the Uuvudhiya area,” he said.

He added that the Etaka-Uuvudhiya canal is a vital resource that will help mitigate the effects of drought, ensuring that farmers have the water they need to sustain their livelihoods.

Further, Nehemia said that as they open the Etaka-Uuvudhiya earth canal, people should remember that this is more than just an infrastructure project. He emphasized that it is a symbol of hope, resilience, and progress, as well as a commitment to the well-being of the people and livestock. It is a promise that no matter the challenges people face, they will always find a way to overcome them together.

Uukwaluudhi Traditional Authority Senior Traditional Leader Malakia Shoombe indicated that they are thrilled to have a water source closer to the people, to be used for livestock and food production purposes.

“We are blessed with a canal that never runs dry, despite the water coming from Angola into Namibia, and it needs protecting at all costs,” he said.

He added that as a traditional authority, they have availed land to their people for farming purposes to benefit everyone, but water scarcity remains a challenge for them.

Shoombe then requested that the Ministry of Agriculture ensure the dam does not run dry, so it can continue to benefit those living along the canal.

The Etaka-Uuvudhiya earth canal, which stretches 130km, is expected to feed Lake Oponona and other off-takes in the areas of the Oshana and Oshikoto regions.

Meanwhile, Omusati Governor Erginus Endjala informed the public that the water has now been opened for their benefit. However, he urged the public to refrain from installing their own equipment, which could block the flow of water, warning that anyone found doing so will be dealt with accordingly.

Maria David FARMERS along the Etaka-Uuvudhiya earth canal received a lifeline of water supply following the pumping of water into the canal by NamWater on Tuesday.
