THE murder trial of Akundaishe Natalie Chipomho took a revealing turn after the High Court on 16 July 2024 heard the confession of Caroline Nkata, who, alongside her husband Edward Nkata and Rachel Kureva (the mother of the deceased), is accused of the heinous murder of the nine-year-old girl whose body was discovered burned in a skip bin in January 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nkatas, alongside Kureva, also face several other counts, such as obstructing the course of justice, contravention of the Child Protection Act, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, contravening the immigration acts, and overstaying in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The evidence was read into the record by retired magistrate Alweendo Venatius, who took the confession from Caroline Nkata, who allegedly confessed two days after her arrest on 26 January 2020. In the confession, it was revealed that the minor girl was assaulted on 23 January 2020 and succumbed to her injuries on Friday, 24 January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I saw Akundaishe Chipomho come into the house and she was crying. Soon, I realised that Edward Nkata was assaulting her. When I realised that Edward Nkata was busy assaulting her, I went out of the bedroom. When I came out of the bedroom I saw Edward Nkata assaulting Akundaishe Chipomho with his hands. I then tried to prevent him from beating her, and he violently pushed me away and he threatened to assault me as well,” Caroline said in her confession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She added that soon after Edward went into another room with Akundaishe, she could not follow them as her one-month-old baby was crying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I went to attend to the baby. When I was in my room, Edward called me and asked for water. I went into the kitchen and got water from the fridge. When I went into the bedroom I found Akundaishe lying on the floor. Edward poured the water on Akundaishe and he was calling her name but she was not responsive. I noticed that she had foam coming from her mouth. Edward took her to the living room, and we were trying to summon her. After he took her to the living room, I suggested that we take her to the hospital. At that time she was still alive, and he threatened to assault me. He said that if I report this to the police, I would also be arrested. Akundaishe stayed in the living room for about an hour and Edward took her to the garage and put her on top of a mattress in the garage. From time to time, I went to check up on her. At the time I had a learner who used to come to my home for me to assist him. That is the reason I was not at the garage all the time. We left Akundaishe in the garage for the night; she slept there for the night,” Caroline said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She added that on Friday morning, around 08:00, she found Akundaishe in the garage and that she was still breathing and alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“After a while from the time I checked her, Edward called me and told me that Akundaishe was no more. And then we checked and realised that her chest was not moving. I asked Edward again why we couldn’t inform the police and he said no and said that he was now also thinking of an idea of how to report me as well. Later on he told me that he was thinking of disposing of the body in the rubbish skip bin. Later in the afternoon, after 14:00, Edward told me to go to the service station to buy paraffin and a fire lighter, even though I told him that I was not feeling well. He just said let us go, or otherwise I will deal with you,” Caroline said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The wife of the murder accused Edward further said that after being forced by her husband, they put the body of Akundaishe in a wheelie bin around 21:00 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Edward took Akundaishe’s body and put it in the wheelie bin. He told me to go with him and if I would not go with him, we would have a problem in the house. He said that he would assault me. So I was afraid of him at that moment, because I looked at him as a murderer, and I followed everything that he was saying to me. He then took the wheelie bin to the rubbish skip and I followed him with the baby on my back until I caught up with him. Then he threw the body into the rubbish skip. Then around midnight, he woke me up and he told me to go with him to burn the body. We went to the rubbish skip, when we got to the rubbish skip, I told him I could not stay. I left the place and went across the road, when I looked back I saw a huge flame of fire and Edward was coming running towards me.
