THE death toll among people involved in an incident where eight individuals were suspected to have suffered from food poisoning at Livayi village, approximately 50km south of Nyangana district hospital, has increased to four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All victims were under the age of 18, ranging in age from 1 to 17 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the death toll has risen to four, with the remaining victims in hospital in stable condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Livayi village has an estimated population of about 417 inhabitants and 58 households, but lacks a clinic. The village has only one health extension worker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The victims allegedly consumed porridge, fresh traditional vegetables (mutete), and soup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe maize meal and the soup were provided as drought relief food, while the mutete was grown at home. The porridge was prepared by a thirteen-year-old boy who is among the suspected cases, using maize meal from the sister-in-law of the household owner,\u201d read the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry indicated that a total of four households were affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was established that there were a total of ten suspected cases, out of which one was reported to have died at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The remaining cases were referred and were on their way to Rundu Intermediate Hospital (RIH), where the second death was reported upon arrival at the casualty ward. Two more victims have since died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ministry added that eight children who ate porridge, mutete, and soup were affected, while the other two consumed only porridge and soup. The porridge and soup were consumed by the two in the morning on Monday, 26th February 2024, before going to school. However, they both immediately experienced symptoms of vomiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rest of the cases prepared a lunch meal using the same maize meal and soup, adding mutete. After supper (maize meal, mutete, and soup), the first suspect, an eight-year-old female, started experiencing severe symptoms during the afternoon hours, including vomiting, convulsions, crying uncontrollably, rolling of eyes, and weakness preventing her from standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2023, a similar case of food poisoning was reported at Kayova village in the Ndiyona area, where a family of 18 allegedly consumed toxic food, resulting in the death of 13 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
