{"id":354541,"date":"2024-02-13T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=354541"},"modified":"2024-02-13T16:46:58","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T14:46:58","slug":"mercure-hotel-general-manager-accused-of-sexual-harassment-and-replacing-namibian-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/?p=354541","title":{"rendered":"Mercure Hotel General Manager accused of sexual harassment and replacing Namibian workers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff Reporter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LUKE Sacco, General Manager of Mercure Hotel, formerly known as Safari Hotel, has come under fire after being accused of sexual harassment by the hotel&#8217;s former and current employees, as well as systematically replacing Namibians in supervisory and managerial positions with foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hotel manager, according to workers, would continuously state that Namibians do not have the expertise or qualifications to occupy managerial or supervisory positions at the hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hotel, acquired in 2021 by Kasada Capital Management, a fund backed by the Qatar Investment Authority, and French hospitality group Accor, has, in response to allegations of sexual abuse, said that their employee and employer relations are private.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mercure-Hotel-General-Manager-Accused-of-Sexual-Harassment-and-Replacing-Namibian-Workers.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-354543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mercure-Hotel-General-Manager-Accused-of-Sexual-Harassment-and-Replacing-Namibian-Workers.jpeg 970w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mercure-Hotel-General-Manager-Accused-of-Sexual-Harassment-and-Replacing-Namibian-Workers-300x168.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mercure-Hotel-General-Manager-Accused-of-Sexual-Harassment-and-Replacing-Namibian-Workers-768x429.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mercure-Hotel-General-Manager-Accused-of-Sexual-Harassment-and-Replacing-Namibian-Workers-537x300.jpeg 537w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mercure-Hotel-General-Manager-Accused-of-Sexual-Harassment-and-Replacing-Namibian-Workers-310x173.jpeg 310w, https:\/\/informante.web.na\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mercure-Hotel-General-Manager-Accused-of-Sexual-Harassment-and-Replacing-Namibian-Workers-150x84.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Informant\u00e9, approached by a number of former as well as current employees of the hotel, conducted interviews with the aggrieved parties who claimed that Sacco is responsible for the unfair dismissal of several workers, while others opted to jump ship due to the unsavoury working environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the former male employees at the hotel, Stefan van Wyk (not real name), explained that he would accompany his fellow female colleague around the hotel after continuous harassment from General Manager Sacco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe told me that she was feeling uncomfortable around Luke and that he made sexual comments to her. She said she did not want to be alone with him so I would make sure I would always be around in meetings. This was towards the end of July 2023. In a morning meeting once, he came in, and our reception desk was really low so the desk&#8217;s height had been increased. He, Luke, said that he liked the reception desk low and that it should be kept as such as it allows him to look down the women\u2019s blouses,\u201d the former employee recounted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another former female employee who held a managerial position at the hotel added that the general manager decided to change what some employees wore to accentuate their female form. \u201cLuke had sexual interest towards three ladies, and he would ask, \u2018what would you think if those ladies wore certain blouses,\u2019 adding that it would most probably accentuate their breasts,\u201d HR thereafter asked us to buy clothes which Luke recommended,\u201d the former employee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the general manager would attempt to take her on dates and would get rude due to her continuous rejection of his advances. \u201cI was pushing Luke away more and more, and he became more and more nasty towards me. I was emotionally broken. I could not handle anything that Luke threw my way anymore; I resigned,\u201d the former female employee said, adding that these claims of harassment were reported to management but remained unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to this, the workers narrated that some of the supervisors in the restaurant were dismissed following inaccurate auditing reports which claimed that money had been missing. Furthermore, it is alleged that the dismissed workers were forced to write incriminating letters by Sacco, and that these letters were used to fire them. The company, in a labour court case, attempted to settle with one of the dismissed restaurant supervisors in the amount of N$30,000; however, this was rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other managers who quit or were fired are from the Food and Beverages department, engineering, head chefs, as well as housekeeping and HR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the allegations, Amoul Coly, Accor&#8217;s Director of Talent &amp; Culture in Sub-Saharan Africa, said that as a good corporate citizen of Namibia, Accor complies fully with all relevant legislation in Namibia and considers employer\/employee details as confidential. \u201cPolicies and processes are in place to deal with any grievance(s) or disciplinary accusation(s) of misconduct.
