WHEN the sun set over the small Kalahari town of Aranos yesterday, little did residents know that their peace and safety would be rocked to its foundations. An armed attack on a couple in their home in the early hours of Sunday morning occurred! Although the couple’s identity is known to Informant\u00e9, it will not be divulged to protect the integrity of the police investigation. What is certain is that the community is impressed by the way the Namibian Police in Aranos responded to the incident and the ongoing coordination between law enforcement clusters in all towns around Aranos and even as far afield as Rehoboth. It remains unclear at this stage whether the gang physically harmed its victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I am very impressed with Aranos police officers. They responded and are working with other police stations to try and corner these criminals. Even in town itself, they are working hard to gather information from residents that could lead to the arrest of the gang,” said an Aranos resident close to the incident, speaking to Informant\u00e9 at around 07:45.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The number of thugs who gained access to the couple’s home at around 02:00 on Sunday is yet unknown. The thugs fled the scene in the couple’s white Toyota pick-up with the registration mark N569AR (the stolen vehicle’s loading box is lined with railing). Stolen items unofficially identified so far are cell phones and firearms. The calibre of guns identified includes a .22 rifle, a 38 special revolver, a 757 Mauzer, a 222 rifle, a 9mm handgun, and a .308 rifle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to community information, the pick-up’s fuel level was at half when the thugs sped off with it. Unconfirmed reports state that the vehicle was spotted on the Uhlenhorst road shortly before 05:00, prompting the Derm police to investigate the validity of this report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police investigators are keeping an open mind as the situation develops and are also investigating other possible routes the escaping thugs could have taken with the stolen car and their loot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Included in this article is an online map depicting the most obvious route between Aranos and Uhlenhorst, which would have taken the gang via Stampriet (if the reports of the stolen vehicle’s position are indeed correct). Uhlenhorst is approximately 120 km northeast of Mariental and can be reached either via Stampriet to its south or via Kalkrand to its west. Derm is located approximately 25 km east of Uhlenhorst, from where the police would have responded upon receiving information about the stolen vehicle’s position. The map also shows that the fleeing thugs have several other possible routes they could take.
