THE Deputy Minister of Marginalised Communities, Royal \u01c0Ui\u01c0o\u01c0oo, called on men to embrace positive masculinity as a way to address the rising problem of violence against women and children in the country.<\/p>\n

\u01c0Ui\u01c0o\u01c0oo’s call for men was part of a speech that was presented on his behalf by the Councillor of the Ompundja Constituency, Adolf Uunona, at the National Men’s Conference 2022.<\/p>\n

The National Men’s Conference was held in Ongwediva under the theme “Galvanising Positive Masculinity to End the Scourge of Violence in Namibia”. The objective of the conference was to determine the causes of gender-based violence (GBV) and violence against children (VAC) in the country and to propose possible solutions to these challenges.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of \u01c0Ui\u01c0o\u01c0oo, Uunona revealed that one third of children in Namibia are subjected to violence every year. This, he said, has significant immediate, long-lasting and irreversible effects on the affected children’s well-being, psychological development and mental health.<\/p>\n

Uunona also revealed that 85% of sexual and domestic violence survivors are women and one in every four young women have survived intimate partner violence. He said that 93% of the perpetrators of intimate violence are men.<\/p>\n

These worrisome statistics, Uunona said, is the reason men from all 14 regions were invited to the men’s conference so that they can discuss and adopt measures that can assist with the fight against GBV and VAC in their respective communities.<\/p>\n

\u01c0Ui\u01c0o\u01c0oo’s speech highlighted toxic masculinity as the main culprit for violence against women and children and he added that this is further encouraged by some cultures that have rigid views of masculinity.<\/p>\n

“In many cultures, men are not expected to cry, to be empathetic and even to care for their mental well-being, but let me be honest with you today, it is okay for the men to cry. Let men and boys release their emotions. Let them not bottle up their emotions, which in the process will explode one day and they will cause harm to women and children,” \u01c0Ui\u01c0o\u01c0oo advised.<\/p>\n

He therefore called on all Namibian men from all walks of life to redefine what it means to be a man. He encouraged men to embrace positive masculinity by using their physical and emotional strength to champion healthy behaviours. By embracing positive masculinity, he said, men will be able to learn healthy behaviours and develop relationships and communities that are free from violence.<\/p>\n

“We need to redefine how the world envisions masculinity. We need to think more about positive masculinity and encourage one another to embrace it. We need to identify and highlight the positive qualities of masculinity to help and to show all men as to how they should ideally behave and conduct themselves as productive citizens in order to contribute meaningfully to prevent GBV and VAC in our communities,” he said.<\/p>\n
