traditional authorities with chieftainship disputes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maria David<\/p>\n<p>PRESIDENT Hage Geingob said it is disturbing that they continue to witness instances of fragmentation, power struggles and leadership succession disputes in a number of their traditional communities.<\/p>\n<p>This is after eleven traditional authorities (TA) were found in dispute over chieftainship succession, while some are waiting for investigations to be conducted.<\/p>\n<p>Geingob, who was speaking during the official opening of the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Council of Traditional Leaders at Eenhana, stated that on numerous occasions, government is dragged into these avoidable disputes, which not only cause divisions among communities, but are also time and resource-consuming.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" data-autoplay=\"true\" data-delay=\"3\" data-effect=\"slide\"><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_pagination swiper-pagination swiper-pagination-white\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The time, energy and resources that are devoted to such disputes could best be spent on matters of priority such as the war against poverty and unemployment,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Geingob indicated that the government continues to be inundated with applications for recognition of new traditional authorities, communities and leaders.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that they cannot have a situation where there is a perpetual proliferation of traditional communities and chieftainships which are often premised on self-serving personal interests, preference and ambitions, while all these years they have peacefully resorted under one traditional authority and leader, sharing the same customs, values, language and culture without any problems.<\/p>\n<p>Geingob noted that where there are legitimate cases for recognition, facts should be established beyond doubt, based on thorough investigation.<\/p>\n<p>He then urged the Attorney-General to speed up the processing and conclusion of cases presented to them to avoid such matters escalating into crises and disillusionment on the part of the parties who present them.<\/p>\n<p>Acting chairperson of Council of Traditional Leaders, Gaob Immanuel \u2260Nu-Axa \/G\u00e2seb, revealed that there are eleven traditional authorities with chieftainship succession disputes, while some are waiting for investigations to be conducted.<\/p>\n<p>\/G\u00e2seb said it is worrisome to continue to witness instances of factionalism and ongoing leadership succession disputes between communities and their leaders.<\/p>\n<p>He then called upon communities to respect their customary norms and practices and to move away from unwanted disputes.<\/p>\n<p>Further, he added that there are presently sixteen recognised TAs without Chiefs. These include the Vaalgras Traditional Authority, Gciriku Traditional Authority, Afrikaner Traditional Authority, Topnaar Traditional Authority, Tsoaxudaman Traditional Authority, Ovambandera Traditional Authority, Ukwangali Traditional Authority, Kai-\/\/Khaun Traditional Authority, Bagalagadi Traditional Authority, Otjikaoko Traditional Authority, !Aman Traditional Authority, Bondelswartz Traditional Authority, Blauwes Traditional Authority, Shambyu Traditional Authority, Ovaherero Traditional Authority and Masubia Traditional Authority.<\/p>\n<p>The succession of Chief Kilus Muryuku III Nguvauva of the Ovambanderu Traditional Authority was successfully done in accordance with the customary law and Traditional Authorities Act (25 of 2000).<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the Batswana ba Namibia TA have successfully designated the successor to the late Chief Constance Khosimang in accordance with the act.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maria David PRESIDENT Hage Geingob said it is disturbing that they continue to witness instances of fragmentation, power struggles and leadership succession disputes in a number of their traditional communities.
