SIX people from different households were arrested in July by the City Police for illegally reconnecting their electricity supply, after it was disconnected due to non-payment, according to the City of Windhoek (CoW).

CoW expressed concerns about the growing trend of electricity theft and warned that it is a criminal offense that is punishable by a fine of up to N$16 000, imprisonment for two years, or both.

This comes a week after mayor Sade Gawanas vented about the growing rate of electricity theft, which she said has “skyrocketed”. She explained that the illegal connections result in overloading, electric interruptions, unaccounted electricity usage, electrical losses and general poor service provision to the residents. She also mentioned that it could cause safety hazards, such as electrocution and fires.

If such activities are detected, CoW warned, CoW will disconnect the electricity supply of the culprit(s) and will only reinstate it after a criminal case is opened, the culprit is apprehended, a split prepaid electricity meter is paid for and necessary payments are made in terms of the CoW Credit Control Policy and Electricity Supply Regulations.

“The City will work closely with the police to ensure that they apprehend residents found to have tampered with the electricity meters and reconnected their electricity illegally,” CoW added.

CoW also urged residents to report incidents of electricity theft to the City Police at 061302302 or to send a text message to 4444.
