MANY people suffering from depression end up committing suicide. More so because they suffer in silence, afraid that opening up would lead to them being stigmatized.
\nBut silence is much more problematic and is the reason behind many a suicide.<\/p>\n
Omusati crime investigations co-ordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Simaho, said that 42 people committed suicide in the region in a period of seven months, and he linked most of those suicides to depression.
\nSix cases of suicide were recorded in January, February (7), March (8), April (4), May (8), June (5) and July so far (4).<\/p>\n
Simaho said that out of the 42 suicide victims, 39 hanged themselves while three used guns to end their own lives.
\nAlthough women are the majority in the Omusati, Region, men are overrepresented when it comes to suicide.
\nOnly three out of 42 are women.<\/p>\n
\u201cFive of the suicide victims are Angolan males,\u201d said Simaho.
\nHe noted that the police have embarked on an extensive awareness campaign, not only about the scourge of suicide but also about other criminal activities.<\/p>\n
“The aim is to teach people how to speak up when facing trouble.
\n\u201cSuicide is a social evil, and when people are confronted by problems they should seek assistance by approaching either the police, church leaders or even trusted family members,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to him, there is no problem that has no solution. “Seeking assistance will help prevent suicidal thoughts,” he said.
\nSimaho urged people to promptly alert the police when they notice or suspect that a friend or family member is having suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n
