THE Kunene Region is still battling with learners not having chairs, tables and beds at schools and hostels. In order to mitigate this shortage of education furnitures, the region will commence with Operation Sida Di /Goan phase 2 in Outjo.

This is was according to Governor Marius Sheya, during his State of the Region Address (SORA).

Operation Sida Di /Goan, which was introduced with an aim of repairing broken furniture to be re-used in schools in the Kunene Region, shall focus on repairing thousands of broken school chairs, desks, beds and buying of mattresses.

By 2019, The initiative successfully repaired 216 beds, 2000 desks, and 2000 chairs, collected from mostly urban schools around the region.

In his address, Sheya stated that education plays an integral role in socio-economic development; thus, it is essential for educational infrastructure to provide a platform for learners to experience holistic academic development.

“It is crucial for learners to be in a learning environment that enables them to acquire skills and knowledge, and in order to be active and responsible citizens. It is with this in mind that the Directorate of Education, Arts, and Culture undertook various projects to improve on the academic landscape of the region,” he said.

Further, Sheya indicated that the Kunene Vocational Training Centre phase 2, comprising of four workshops and administration building, is 85% complete and expected to be handed over to the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) by the end of October 2022.

“Construction of phase 3 will continue unabated,” he added.

According to Sheya, the construction of the Kunene VTC has also resulted in the employment creation for the inhabitants.

He further added that the government continues to invest massively in education and mostly in the vocational sector which, in his view, will impart the necessary technical skills needed for growth and transformation within their region and the country at large.
