Photo: Bloomberg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They are accused in South Africa of profiting from their close links with Zuma and exerting unfair influence, winning business contracts, influencing high-profile government appointments and misappropriating state funds.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian-born brothers, who moved to South Africa in 1993, fled the country after a Commission of Inquiry into State Capture (the Zondo Commission) began probing their involvement in corruption in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the findings include that Rajesh Gupta allegedly offered bribes to former SAA CEO Vuyisile Kona and former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the revelations from the inquiry concern the relationship between the Zumas, centred on the former SA president, and the Guptas. The two families became so closely linked that a term was coined for them: the &#8220;Zuptas&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>State capture is a form of corruption in which businesses and politicians conspire to influence a country&#8217;s decision-making process to advance their own interests. As most democracies have laws to make sure this does not happen, state capture also involves weakening those laws, and neutralising any agencies that enforce them.<\/p>\n<p>The Guptas also face accusations of money laundering in India, where tax officials raided properties belonging to them in 2018 in multiple cities, including their company office in Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Atul Gupta became the seventh-wealthiest person in South Africa, with an estimated net worth of R10.7 billion (US$773.47 million), based on JSE-listed holdings.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services in a statement confirmed it received information from law enforcement authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) \u201cthat fugitives of justice, namely, Rajesh and Atul Gupta have been arrested. Discussions between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE and South Africa on the way forward are ongoing.
